1. NEO TRENCH COAT – A heavy-duty cotton full-length coat in deep black. This cosplay item is a replica of the one worn by Neo in The Matrix. It comes very highly rated and offers excellent value for money.
2. BLACK SWEATER – You will need a black sweater or Tee for your DIY Neo costume. We recommend choosing something with a subtle texture or ribbing.
3. SUNGLASSES – What’s the best thing about a Matrix costume? It’s the fact that you can wear shades indoors, of course! Get yourself a pair of futuristic sunglasses with a black tint.
4. JEANS – Neo wears a pair of black trousers. This is super easy if you already have a pair at home. Alternatively, leather motorcycle pants are a great option and fit well with the dystopian futuristic vibe of this Neo costume.
5. BELT – Next, add a quality leather belt with a silver buckle. An additional belt can also be wrapped around your leg to make Neo’s leg strap.
6. BOOTS – You will want a pair of heavy-duty boots in black. Motorcycle apparel is a great option here too. Combat boots or knee-high equestrian boots are also suitable.
7. TOY GUN – This is an optional accessory. But if you want to kit out your Neo costume with some added firepower then you can’t go wrong with a toy machine gun. It’s time to dodge some bullets!
Neo (Played by Keanu Reeves) is the primary protagonist of The Matrix series. He comes to represent something of a Christ figure, freeing humanity from the repressed state and toward ultimate liberation.
As ‘The One’, it is prophesized that he will eventually bring an end to the matrix simulation, used to keep humans subservient to the machines so that they can harness their biomass to power their own agenda.
As we see at the end of the original movie, there have in fact been multiple ‘The Ones’ who eventually failed in their mission. However, it is this final iteration of Neo that will eventually break the cycle of subjugation once and for all.

1. TRINITY OUTFIT – This licensed costume comes completely with Trinity’s leather trench coat and shades. It is honestly almost identical to the outfit worn by Carrie-Anne Moss in the movies and excellent quality.
2. BOOTS – Get yourself a pair of over-the-knee leather or latex boots with a nice chunky heel.
3. PANTS – What we love most about this DIY Trinity costume is that it’s the perfect excuse to dress head-to-toe in seductive leather. What more could you ask for?
4. CROP TOP – Next, you will need a matching crop top (also in leather).
5. GLOVES – Rounding out the leather ensemble is a pair of black gloves. With such a distinctive aesthetic, this outfit can stand alone with ease but Neo and Trinity is also the perfect couple’s costume.
6. TOY GUNS – Finally, Trinity is famous for skillfully dual-wielding a pair of handguns. You could always go for one but we feel it’s always best to have a spare handy!
Trinity (played by Carrie-Anne Moss) is the main love interest of The Matrix trilogy, as well as being an integral part of the Nebuchadnezzar crew (the real-world hovercraft captained by Morpheus).
Relatively little is revealed about Trinity’s past life within the matrix, though she is famed as a highly skilled hacker and was recognized by Morpheus, who initially freed her.
Trinity and Neo is also one of our most popular couple costumes of all time.

1. TRENCH COAT – The full-length jacket featured here is truly a thing of beauty and is perfect if you are looking to make the best Morpheus costume possible. Based on the one worn by Laurence Fishburne and made from genuine leather. However, if you are just looking to make a cheap and easy costume, we recommend something like this WWII officer trench coat.
2. VEST – This is the most stylish DIY Matrix costume you could possibly hope for. Under his leather jacket, Morpheus wears an eye-catching purple suit.
3. TROUSERS – Finish your two-piece suit with a matching pair of formal purple trousers.
4. TIE – You will want a yellow tie to compliment your Morpheus costume (somebody has been studying their color wheels).
5. SHIRT – Finally, a plain black dress shirt rounds off your tailored outfit.
6. GLASSES – No DIY Matrix costume is complete without a badass pair of shades. Morpheus just so happens to have the coolest pair of all: round frames with a clip nose.
Morpheus is the name of the god of dreams within Greek mythology. The Matrix character was also based on one of the same name from Neil Gaiman’s fictional universe The Sandman, which drew heavily from Greek mythology.
This is largely consistent with Morpheus’s role within the wider Matrix universe, as the one who first wakes humans from their dreamlike state within the machine-run simulation.
Famously, Morpheus presents a life-altering choice to a select few inhabitants. Choose the blue pill (returning to normality and erasing any knowledge of the simulated nature of their world) or the red pill (waking the individual from the simulation).

1. SUIT – We love any excuse to get suited and booted. This is one of the easiest Matrix costumes to make because it all hinges on a simple two-piece black suit (which you might well already own).
2. SHOES – Likewise, this is one Agent Smith costume accessory you probably already own. A regular pair of black formal shoes is all you need.
3. TIE – Add a slim plain black tie. Nothing fancy here, Agent Smith’s costume is all about blending in with the crowd and not drawing attention.
4. TIE CLIP – Optionally, add a tie clip to elevate the style of this cosplay even further (as if that were possible).
5. EARPIECE – Depending on whether you’re cosplaying as Agent Smith from the original Matrix or its sequels, you might need a coil earpiece. Have you gone rogue or are you plugged into the system?
6. SUNGLASSES – Man, these Matrix shades just get cooler and cooler, don’t they? Along with Morpheus, these are definitely some of our favorites.
7. TOY GUN – Finally, like Trinity, Agent Smith doesn’t go far without his trusty handgun close by.
Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) initially exists as a piece of code within the matrix, designed to rid the program of obsolete or rogue individuals that no longer serve the purpose of the machines.
Neo seemingly kills Agent Smith at the end of the first movie. However, through a connection with Neo, Smith is able to return as a rogue program. No longer at the service of the machines, Smith attempts to take over the simulation and rebuild it in his own image (quite literally).
His corporate black suit costume design allows him to seamlessly blend in with the other humans, as well as giving him an ominous overtone of secretive authority.

1. TWINS COSTUME – The cosplay set comes with a replica Twins full-length coat and matching sunglasses. It is an inexpensive and easy way to start this DIY Matrix costume.
2. WIG – One of the most recognizable parts of this cosplay is the deadlock hairstyle both antagonists rock. Get yourself a similarly styled wig and you’re ready to go!
3. SHIRT – The Twins wear an ivory and gray combination. You will need a regular dress shirt for this.
4. TROUSERS – Similarly, simply add a pair of matching gray dress trousers.
5. VEST – Add an ivory-colored vest under your trench coat. These computer programs are better dressed than most humans.
6. TIE – Finally, complete your Matrix costume with a matching ivory tie.
The Twins (played by identical twins Adrian & Neil Rayment) are henchmen of The Merovingian (sometimes referred to as ‘The Frenchman’) and feature prominently in the 2003 sequel The Matrix: Reloaded.
Although never explicitly expressed, it is widely implied that The Twins represent leftover programming from an early iteration of the Matrix. A.K.A the precursors to Agent Smith, existing in a time before shiny black latex, leather, and business suits took over the world.

As one of the most iconic Science Fiction franchises of all time, The Matrix is an incredibly popular cosplay option for Halloween, Comic-cons, and costume parties.
With a distinctive aesthetic, based on a dystopian future where everyone wears spandex, leather, and killer shades, it is also one of our coolest costume ideas.

The original Matrix may be over 20 years old but it remains an icon of Science Fiction world-building and cyberpunk costume design.
The brainchild of the Wachowskis, on the surface, The Matrix tapped into an innate fear of machine sentience that is more relevant today than ever. However, dig a little further and you will find a parable on how we live our lives in conformity and oftentimes blissfully ignorance. If given the opportunity, would we be the type of person to take the blue pill or the red pill?
But enough of all that. We are here to dress head-to-toe in spandex like Trinity, rock futuristic shades at all times like Agent Smith, and look badass in slow-motion like Neo. Dress up like all the best Matrix characters with our easy DIY costume guides.
