ABOUT EBENEZER SCROOGE:
Ebenezer Scrooge – the central character in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” – begins as a miserly and cold-hearted old man, driven by the pursuit of wealth above all else.
As a wealthy businessman, he lives a lonely life with his only relationship of note being with his underpaid employee and nephew, Bob Cratchit.
Scrooge’s turning point comes when he is visited by three otherworldly beings (The Ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come) who show him the errors of his ways and the fate that will befall him unless he changes his ways.
1. JACKET – Start your Scrooge costume with a classic velvet smoking jacket, filled with all the aristocratic elegance of the Victorian age.
2. PANTS – Next, add some similarly vintage-styled cuff pants in a dark brown or maroon color.
3. SHIRT – And a matching white sleeping shirt with a laced-up collar.
4. HAT – While this was once a common part of bedtime attire, this ‘Scrooge’ sleeping hat is now synonymous with the Dicken’s character.
5. WIG – Get that crotchety old man look with this unruly balding wig.
6. EYEBROWS – Add a pair of bushy white eyebrows too.
7. MUTTON CHOPS – Don’t forget a pair of majestically long mutton chops and now you’re looking every bit the Victorian gentleman!
8. CANDLE HOLDER – In the days before electricity, a candle holder just like this was how many a Victorian had to get around during the night.
9. CANDLES – Finally, finish your Scrooge outfit with a real ivory long-candle.
Everyone knows an Ebenezer Scrooge, someone who seems to irrationally hate Christmas and, indeed, all things joyous and festive.
Turn the character of Scrooge on its head and celebrate in style at your next Christmas-themed costume party. Bah humbug you ain’t!
