Ebenezer Scrooge – the central character in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” – begins as a miserly and cold-hearted old man, driven by the pursuit of wealth above all else.

As a wealthy businessman, he lives a lonely life with his only relationship of note being with his underpaid employee and nephew, Bob Cratchit.

Scrooge’s turning point comes when he is visited by three otherworldly beings (The Ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come) who show him the errors of his ways and the fate that will befall him unless he changes his ways.

Dickens’ novel is a timeless classic Christmas tale about the dangers of unchecked greed and the importance of human connection; the metric by which we should all measure our true wealth.

1. Smoking Jacket: If you are looking for a quick and easy Christmas costume, then the Ebenezer Scrooge nightgown costume is a classic and ready to go. However, for our outfit (based on the 2009 animated A Christmas Carol adaptation), we decided to go instead for Scrooge’s stylish velvet smoking jacket.

Either a brown or maroon smoking jacket is a great option.

2. Pajamas: A lace-up shirt and cuff pants are perfect for recreating this period costume. Both look distinctly Victorian and suit Scrooge’s upper-class sleeping attire just right.

3. The hairstyle: To make Scrooge’s ‘cranky old man’ look we used three costume pieces: an old man’s balding wig, comically overgrown mutton chops, and a pair of bushy white eyebrows.

4. Candlestick holder: The finishing touch for this Scrooge outfit? A Victorian-inspired candlestick holder and ivory candlestick. And just like that, your A Christmas Carol costume is ready to go!
