ABOUT LILO PELEKAI:
Lilo Pelekai is the spirited little Hawaiian girl with a big heart and an even bigger imagination. She’s quirky, independent, and unapologetically herself—whether she’s teaching hula, taking care of her big sister Nani, or adopting an alien “dog” named Stitch. Known for her red leaf-print dress and her love for Elvis Presley, Lilo embodies the meaning of ohana—family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. If you want a costume that’s colorful, fun, and heartwarming, Lilo is a perfect choice.
1. RED HAWAIIAN LEAF DRESS – Lilo’s iconic outfit is a bright red dress covered in large white leaf prints, instantly recognizable to Disney fans.
2. GREEN LEI & BRACELETS – Add tropical flair with a green flower lei and matching wristbands, perfect for hula dancing.
3. SANDALS OR SLIDES – Keep it casual and beach-ready with simple sandals or navy-blue slides.
4. LONG BLACK WIG – Lilo’s straight, jet-black hair is key to pulling off her look. A wig makes it easy if you don’t already have the style.
5. STITCH PLUSH TOY – No Lilo costume is complete without her alien BFF. Carrying a Stitch plush adds instant charm.
Together, these pieces capture Lilo’s sweet island vibe while letting you celebrate one of Disney’s most beloved characters.
Lilo isn’t just another Disney kid—she’s the heart of Lilo & Stitch. With her boundless imagination and fierce loyalty, she proves that family is everything, even when it’s unconventional. If you’ve ever felt a little different but proud of it, this is the costume for you.
But enough chit-chat—this is hands-down one of our favorite Disney family costumes! It’s colorful, nostalgic, and easy to DIY with fantastic results.

Lilo’s best-known outfit is a loose red dress decorated with large white tropical leaves. She wears it with simple blue or dark-colored sandals and her long black hair loose.
Start with a plain red dress or oversized red T-shirt. Cut the leaf shapes from white felt or iron-on vinyl and attach them across the front and back before adding sandals, a black wig and a Stitch or Scrump accessory.
Lilo’s dress features large white tropical leaf shapes, rather than hibiscus flowers. Recreating the correct leaf pattern will make a homemade Lilo costume look more accurate.
A Scrump doll is the most character-specific accessory because Scrump is Lilo’s handmade rag doll. A Stitch plush, toy camera or Elvis record also references important parts of her personality and story.
Stitch is the obvious choice for a Lilo and Stitch best-friend or sibling costume. Larger groups can add Nani, David, Angel, Jumba and Pleakley to create a complete Lilo & Stitch family costume.
Base the costume on Lilo’s recognizable red leaf-print dress, sandals and character accessories. Avoid changing your skin tone or treating Hawaiian culture as a caricature, and choose Lilo’s everyday dress instead of using traditional hula clothing as a generic costume.
