Kronk and Yzma ‘How to’ Costume Guide

Kronk and Yzma DIY costume guide

Kronk and Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove has become a viral couple’s costume sensation. This is everything you and your partner need to know so you can make your own showstopping DIY outfits.

The Emperor’s New Groove is a Disney cult classic and arguably one of their most underappreciated movies, commercially speaking.

The story follows Emperor Kuzco, who is transformed into a Llama by his power-mad advisor Yzma with the help of her hapless henchman, Kronk.

Kuzco embarks on a journey to regain the throne and, in the process, learns what it really means to be a ruler and to serve the needs of his citizens over his own.

Kronk Costume

Our Kronk and Yzma costume guide starts with the handsome and loveable, but oh-so dimwitted, Kronk.

  2. Purple midi skirt
  3. Light purple cotton craft fabric

  5. Gladiator sandals
  6. Long cosplay wig

1. Kronk accessories: If you want a quick and maybe last-minute Kronk costume, you could always just go for a complete Kronk outfit. However, we think we can do better and make a more realistic costume ourselves. So we just started with the basics: Kronk’s helmet, collar, and cuffs. Don’t forget: you will need a light-blue sleeveless tee to wear underneath your golden collar.

We also ended up making our own wrist and ankle cuffs (see below) but this is entirely up to you.

2. The skirt: Have no qualms about wearing a skirt? Kronk certainly didn’t. We went for a flared midi skirt with an elasticated waist (for extra flexibility when it comes to sizing). If you go this route, remember sizes are meant for women so order a size or two up. Alternatively, a pair of purple shorts is another option.

3. Loincloth: We made our own with a length of cotton fabric and a little help from this WikiHow article on how to make your own loincloth. Note: most craft fabric is sold by the yard. If you are following the above article, you will need approx. 10-12 feet in length (3.3-4 yards). Make sure when purchasing fabric that it is sold in one continuous length and not precut. If you find the width too wide, you can always cut it to size or (much easier) simply fold it in half.

4. Ankle and wrist straps: We made these ourselves using leather straps, which we simply wrapped tightly around our wrists and ankles (think Roman Gladiator) and secured with leather glue. This is the easiest approach but the major downside is that they are not easily removable if you want to mix up your Kronk costume. Another option could be to choose a thinner strap that makes it easier to tie and untie each end.

5. Gladiator sandals: Get yourself a pair of strappy sandals. The gladiator sandals from Dr. Martens are perfect for this Kronk costume. However, any sandals will really work here. If you don’t want to spend money on a new pair, it could just be time to dig through your beach vacation clothes.

6. Wig: If you’re not blessed with luscious long black locks like Kronk, a suitable wig might be on the cards. There are plenty out there to choose from. Just make sure you choose one that is jet-black and medium-long in length.

7. Muscle suit: Unfortunately, God didn’t see fit to bless any of us here at whatisXwearing with the body of an Olympian. If you’re in the same boat, then a muscle suit can be a funny, tongue-in-cheek finishing touch for this outfit. Of course, this is completely optional. If you do go this route, remember all your other accessories will have to be sized up appropriately.

Yzma Costume

Yzma is one of the most iconic Disney villains of all time. Her bold fashion sense makes her, in our opinion, the real star of this Kronk and Yzma couple’s costume.

Buy Yzma costume items:

  1. Black dress with headgear
  2. Purple feather shawl
  3. Square open-toe heels
  4. Wine-red artificial nails
  5. Blue round earrings
  6. Light purple bodypaint
  7. White bodypaint

1. Yzma’s dress: The focal point of this Yzma costume is undoubtedly her striking full-length black dress. For our outfit, we went for a dress and headpiece combo. However, the rest of the accessories for this outfit are so iconic, you could always choose your own black dress. Maybe a high-split maxi dress instead?

2. The shawl: No female Disney villain is complete without an oversized and evil-looking collar. Yzma’s feather shrug is undoubtedly one of the most iconic. Alternatively, many of our favorite cosplayers also used a purple feather boa for an easy-to-achieve yet equally impactful DIY outfit.

3. Footwear: Grab yourself a pair of strappy purple heels with a square toe. Because your feet will often be covered by your full-length dress, you could also get away with a more comfortable pair of purple flats, if you prefer.

4. Nails: We love any excuse to wear a set of false stiletto nails. For our Yzma costume, we went for a more conservative length in a deep wine-red color. However, you are free to go as long as you want. That’s the beauty of dressing as a cartoon villain!

5. Earrings: There’s no doubt about it, Yzma is a true fashion icon. Her over-the-top outfits are complimented by a few enviable dangle earrings throughout The Emperor’s New Groove. Our personal favorite is her set of oversized blue bauble earrings. Though, teardrop earrings are also a great option. This is really your chance to wear the most impressive and showstopping jewelry you own.

6. Bodypaint: Now for the fun part! Finish your Yzma costume by coating yourself head-to-toe in light purple bodypaint. Like us, you might want to mix a purple bodypaint with a little white to recreate Yzma’s almost lilac skin tone. Whatever paint you go for, make sure it is non-toxic and paraben-free. Always do a small patch test first to make sure it is suitable for your skin. Remember, everyone’s skin is different.
