ABOUT THE FOURTH DOCTOR:
The Fourth Doctor, portrayed by Tom Baker, is one of the most iconic incarnations of the Doctor in Doctor Who. He appeared from 1974 to 1981, known for his long scarf, curly hair, and eccentric personality. Characterized by a whimsical nature and a mix of warmth and brooding intensity, he often displayed a strong moral compass and a capacity for righteous anger.
1. COAT – Begin your Tom Baker cosplay with his classic brown frock coat.
2. SCARF – An absolute must-have is this officially licensed by the BBC Fourth Doctor scarf. There is also a larger version available if you want to go truly authentic.
3. WAISTCOAT – Next, you will need a retro-style plaid waistcoat like this one.
4. HAT – Almost as iconic as Baker’s multicolored scarf is his wide-brim hat.
5. NECKERCHIEF – Forget about ties and bowties, the Fourth Doctor knew that the neckerchief was the hottest accessory of his era.
6. PANTS – We recommend ordering a size up when getting your checkered dress pants to get that extra-baggy look.
7. SHOES – For footwear, you will want some slightly clunky looking dress shoes.
8. WIG – Finally, not all of us can be blessed with a frizzy afro like Baker’s so we will have to settle for this very similar wig.
Tom Baker is probably the most recognizable of all the Doctors from the classic era of Doctor Who TV.
From the oversized striped scarf to his wide-brimmed hat and fetching pea coat, this is one of the most iconic looks to ever grace the small screen.

Wear a long brown or burgundy frock coat over a patterned waistcoat, light shirt and loose checkered trousers. Add a wide-brimmed hat, curly brown wig, ankle boots and the Fourth Doctor’s unmistakable multicolored scarf.
The scarf changed throughout Tom Baker’s Doctor Who seasons, with versions ranging from approximately 12 feet to more than 20 feet. Its recurring colors include camel, rust, mustard, purple, gray, greenish brown and bronze. A shorter replica is more practical for crowded events.
The Fourth Doctor usually wears a wide-brimmed brown felt hat described as a fedora or trilby. Choose one with a relatively tall crown and broad brim to balance the long coat and oversized scarf.
Tom Baker’s final-season outfit uses a much darker burgundy and maroon color palette. It includes a burgundy greatcoat, matching hat, waistcoat and trousers, plus a crimson scarf with purple stripes instead of the earlier multicolored design.
The Fourth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver is the most recognizable prop. You can also carry a paper bag of jelly babies, a yo-yo or a replica Key to Time, depending on the particular era being recreated.
Sarah Jane Smith, Leela, Romana and K9 are the most recognizable companion choices. Romana works particularly well for a Doctor Who duo, while Davros, a Dalek or the Master can add a classic villain to a larger group.
