ABOUT RYU:
Ryu is a central character in Capcom’s Street Fighter series, first appearing in the original game in 1987. A dedicated martial artist, he practices a style called Ansatsuken, which combines elements of karate and other disciplines. Ryu is known for his iconic white gi and his quest to become the strongest fighter. He grapples with his inner darkness, manifesting in alter egos like Evil Ryu. His signature move, the Hadouken, symbolizes his fighting spirit and determination
1. GI – Start your Ryu cosplay with a white gi, which you can then cut roughly around the arm and leg holes to create the same jagged edges.
2. GLOVES – Next, you will need a pair of red fighting gloves, MMA, Kick Boxing, or sparring wrap gloves all work well.
3. HEADBAND – Add a Samurai-style red headband to recreate Ryu’s original look.
4. BELT – As a master of Martial Arts, it is only to be expected that Ryu should be a certified black belt.
5. WIG – Finally, this black, layered and spiky wig is the perfect way to round off this kickass look.
Are you a diehard fan of Street Fighter? Then keep it with whatisxwearing for all the inspiration you need.
Ryu might be one of the all-time favorite characters and a truly classic cosplay option but there are also so many more to choose from.
From relative newcomers like Luke Sullivan to fellow series veterans such as Cammy, you will find them all in our Street Fighter cosplay collection below!
Wear a sleeveless white karate gi with deliberately frayed edges and a black martial arts belt. Add a long red headband, padded red gloves and a short spiky black wig. A lightweight blue Hadouken prop can make the costume even more recognizable.
Ryu wears a weathered white karate gi with the sleeves roughly torn away. An inexpensive costume or karate gi provides a better match than the heavier, tighter-sleeved uniforms commonly used for Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Ryu originally wore a white headband in the first Street Fighter game. In the Street Fighter Alpha storyline, Ken gives Ryu his red hair ribbon as a reminder to remain focused, and it subsequently becomes one of Ryu’s signature accessories.
Classic versions of Ryu wear red or brown padded fingerless fighting gloves and usually fight barefoot. For parties and conventions, use lightweight martial arts shoes or discreet sandals rather than walking barefoot.
Street Fighter 6 presents an older, bearded Ryu wearing a brown kasaya-style robe over his traditional white training clothes. He also wears brown sandals rather than fighting barefoot. His classic white gi remains available as an alternate outfit.
Ken Masters is the most recognizable choice for a Ryu duo costume because the two are longtime friends and rivals. Chun-Li, Guile and Cammy work well for a larger hero group, while Akuma or Sagat can provide an opposing fighter.
